Workplace injury then laid off
I am a salaried commercial construction Project Superintendent in Florida. With work slowing down the company I worked for has had several lay-offs this year.
On a Wednesday in October I injured my back while lifting some items to load into my supervisor’s truck. Witnessed by the supervisor. I did not file a Superintendents First Report of Accident or go to a doctor however, when the discomfort persisted for a couple days I did fill out the form on Friday and save it to my company issued laptop. The following Monday the supervisor showed up at the project and advised me I was laid off.
Needless to say this came as a surprise to me.
I'm not entirely sure this was or was not related to the accident or to downsizing or a little of both but it has left me in an entirely untenable situation and I would like to know if I have any recourse for redressing the issue.
