workers comp

I was hurt in 1996 and off from work for one month. I proceeded to work for the next 4 years untill the injury got worse and required back surgery. They are paying me wages from 1996. Why I lost a lot of money.I cant beleive that you dont get paid from the time you go out of work from the injury.
