Default unlawful termination/ rights and recourse

I live in Kentucky and was recently "let go" from a job I had been with for over a year. The reason given was that corporate had ordered a cut in hours chain wide and they were letting all part time employees go.
The reason I am writing is there was a new person hired part time this past week and there are other part time employees still working in the store. Also, recently the store suffered a large inventory loss and everyone was pretty much interrogated by the store's security person. While I had nothing to do with the loss, a person who lives with me was also interviewed and ended up quitting during the interview because he felt he was singled out (he was interviewed twice as long as I was).
While I am certain he had nothing to do with the loss, I can't help but wonder if I am a victim of guilt by association.
I was told I didn't do anything wrong and would be welcome back in a few months when sales picked up.
What can I do to protect myself? Would a service letter help? If I request one, would my employer be required to provide it?
Thank you in advance for your reply!
Eric B

That may be true; neither you nor we can really know. But unless you had an employment contract of some sort to the contrary, an employer can let you go for any reason not protected by law (such as your race, age, etc.).

Then I'd have to guess they were NOT considering you a guilty party in any form, since they're willing to have you back.

Nothing really. Employment with any employer is at the pleasure of the employer. There's nothing you can do to MAKE them take you back, or to keep you if they do take you back. Google "at will employment".

Have you browsed through the information in LawInfo's Free Legal Resource Center to learn more about your issue yet? See: http://www.lawinfo.com/consumer.html and http://resources.lawinfo.com/en/index.html. You can certainly try to speak to a lawyer to determine what legal options may be available. In the meantime, you may be able to learn more on your own. Search the "Free Legal Resources" tab, or browse the Consumer Resources. Good luck.
