Red face Toddler disability qualification?

At 4 months old, our son was diagnosed with a rare condition, Optic Nerve Hypoplasia, that affects his vision. How do we know if this condition is considered a disability and what benefits can we exploit for his benefit? He is not blind and has no other symptoms at this time. At 18 months old, we see his progress but know he will always struggle with a vision deficit. Up to this point, we do not require financial assistance for him. But, should we apply for anything or have his condition documented in someway, to qualify for assistance if he needs it in the future? Can we pursue retribution to offset our household expenditures towards accommodating his condition?

I can understand that this is a frustrating situation for you. I suggest you contact an attorney to discuss your legal options. You can find an attorney through the locator service on LawInfo’s home page at: http://www.lawinfo.com/.

You can also browse through the information in LawInfo’s Free Legal Resource Center here: http://www.lawinfo.com/index.cfm/fus...lient.consumer, or search for your particular topic here: http://resources.lawinfo.com/index.html.

• You can know everything when you try to visit Social Security Official Website. Before doing that, to consider your child as disabled, “the child must have a physical or mental condition or a combination of conditions that result in “marked and severe functional limitations.” This means that the condition(s) must very serious limiting your child’s activities. - Consider that.

• You can have his condition documented for future-sake in case he needs assistance.
• I cannot give definite opinion if you should apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. Maybe for some other kind of benefit not under social security. For definite answer, you may want to refer to a social security lawyer or advocate to get the best lights.
