Soldier Sailor Act
I've got a question regarding the Soldier Sailors act. Here's what I have going on.
On March 1, 2006, I signed an apartment lease, in which I am required to live in my apartment for 12 months, with the lease ending on February 28, 2006. When I signed the lease, there was a special going on in which I got one free months rent ($700). I was not a member of the military at the time I signed the lease.
On September 5, 2006, I entered the delayed entry program as a member of the US Air Force. No official contracts were signed, due to the fact that I was not given an official "job" or ship date.
Today, November 27, 2006, I was given a job and a ship date of February 13, 2007 as an active duty member for four years.
Before I entered the delayed entry program, I talked with my apartment complex and was told that I can opt out due to the Soldier Sailor Act. Nothing was ever said about the free month that I got for rent.
I talked with my complex today, and they said that when I get out of my contract, they will need the $700 back, since the contract was not completed. Does this sound right? Is there anything that I can do to get around this? I read the act, but I didn't see that I have any rights to get around this, but just asking to see if anything can be done.
Any help/advice is appreciated...
Thanks!
Dustin
