question about summons served for debt collection
My inlaws were on vacation while my wife and I were housesitting for them. While my wife was out watering the plants a man came up and asked her if she was related to them and handed her a summons for them to appear in court to answer charges relating to unpaid credit card debt. This has been a debt they have been working on resolving for some time. My question is simple. Since they have not received this summons could they be held legally responsible for missing the court date if they never received it? Since they didn't get our names is there any way we could be held responsible? My understanding is that summons should be served directly to the person named as the plaintiff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Brian
