Question about petit larceny

Hi, I 23 years old and I wanted to apply to a university..but as to every University's application they always ask if you've commited felony..in 2004 I was w/ the wrong crew trying to help one of my friend I gave him a big discount of clothing items. Him and I get caught by the security man and were send to the court. We didn't go to jail or anything but instead we showed up at the court date and were told to pay off 250 dollars fine. few years latter I found out that I had petit larceny on my criminal record through a job I was applying. I had never comminted any other crime I have very clean record. My question here is. 1. How long will this stay in my record? 2. Is there anything I can do to clear it out? 3. what is the ruling about this in the state of VA? 4. How will it effect my University chances? 5. when applying to a job or admission to University when it says"felony" does petit larceny fall under this category? 6. could i respond to that answer "no" on the applications?

Criminal records last forever, Hire an Attorney and see if it can be expunged,No that charge is misdemenor, Ho wit effects your job or schools no ne can say, Its important that you be truthful on your applications
