Angry Problems with trespassing neighbor

My family owns about 50 acres on a small island off the coast of Maine since 1976. We do not live here year-round, but all inhabitants of this island have always known that we like our privacy, and have respected the "Private" and "No Trespassing" signs that line our driveway.
But for years now, we have had problems with one neighbor, a bed and breakfast owner, who thinks that it is his right to trespass over our property and tells his customers to do the same. Twice now he has ripped our "Private" signs down from the telephone poles on our driveway, and on more than one occaision he has built a path in our yard down to the shore, with markers, boards and such in order to make an easier way. On each such occaision, my family has confronted him and his customers, telling them that there is no such path and it should stop. We have sent him certified letters explaining that in no way do we allow him or anyone else onto our property without our consent.
Despite this, it has continued. My family is sick and tired of this passive aggressive behavior and we want to know what else can we do to stop this problem. Any suggestions are welcome.

I understand that this is a frustrating situation. I would suggest that you speak with an attorney in Maine to discuss your legal options and what can be done to stop this man from trespassing on your land. Is the path the only way for him to get to the ocean? You can locate an attorney through the attorney locator on Lawinfo's home page at http://www.lawinfo.com/. Some do offer free consultations.

Thank you very much. It is not the only way down to the shore, in fact he has built other paths behind his house that lead his customers down to the beach! It is really incredible. We will contact a lawyer to see what can be done.
