Default locked in so you cant go outside to smoke on your lunch break

my work always has paid all of its employees for their lunch breaks for working overnights. we used to go outside for fresh air and some of us a smoke. now they lock us in the building and dont allow us to go outside at all. we are unable to smoke for our whole 8 hr. shift and we are mad. they tell us its because they cant take the alarm down for security reasons but then again they take it down for reasons here and there. isnt this illegal. arent you allowed to take your lunch break without being in a locked building especially since they have never done this before in the ten years ive been there........
