Default Landlord liability for fire/landlord negligence

I started renting a house in April and we were the first tenants after the landlord bought and fixed up the house. Yesterday morning at 5:30am while everyone was sleeping, the garage started on fire and all of our property inside it was destroyed including 2 vehicles. The investigator is coming on Monday to find out what caused the fire. If this was due to an electrical problem is the landlord liable for our property? Shouldn't he have had the electrical wiring inspected before renting out the house. Should we hire our own investigator to find the cause of the fire? If possible, could you give me laws specific for Michigan? We didn't have renter's insurance. Thank you in advance for any help, it will be greatly appreciated.

Your moving too fast here. First off you dont know cause and if was preventable or not. You should have had renters insurance. Anyone can pretty much sue anyone for anything but doesnt mean there will be a payout. Once you have report on fires cause then talk to an Attorney. You can of course hire your own investigator but the cost is on you unless you win an award and its included

I can certainly understand this is a frustrating situation for you. I do agree with underdog. I suggest you contact an attorney to determine your legal options. You can find an attorney through the locator service on LawInfo’s home page at: http://www.lawinfo.com/.

You can also browse through the information in LawInfo’s Free Legal Resource Center here: http://www.lawinfo.com/index.cfm/fus...lient.consumer, or search for your particular topic here: http://resources.lawinfo.com/index.html.
