November '09 I brought in a Lady's Oyster Perpetual Lady Datejust Rolex Watch for repair. My watch was ran over by a Honda Accord vehicle.. The jeweler had me leave the watch so he can check out the repair. He was not to repair without informing me of the cost first. I wasn't sure if it was worth repairing or scraping for gold. After a few days I called him and he said he sent it out to his "watch guy" .. Holidays came and went, various phone calls: He's not in, busy at the moment, call back later, etc. Finally I was uncomfortable with this and I called asking if I can pick it up as I would like to get prices from other jewelers/repair techs.. He told me it wasn't at his shop, his watch man probably still had it. He said it was badly damaged and wasn't worth the repair, and frankly, it was unrepairable. I told him there was a jeweler who was curious to the damage, as they are a family owned business and would like the watch because of the damage as to have his son have the experience of a repair of this nature. He said that he would pay the value of gold and then some..(thought this was a lie, as I just wanted the watch back at this point) The owner (Steven) said no one can offer the amount for gold as he could. I thanked him, but would like to see what this jeweler was offering. I was told to call back the next day. It was 2 days later before I was able to get back with him, when I called I was told he was in Canada (where he's originally from) and would be back in a month. I explained my situation and was told I had to wait until his return. I called a little over a month later and found he was back here in Georgia, however he was very ill in the hospital. At this point I'm calling every week.. Finally his son Adam agreed to check out the situation. After speaking several times over the phone, and he spoke with his father.. However he didn't have any paperwork on the watch as to it's measurements and other stats.. The watch couldn't be found.. Several calls later, Adam offered me $800. I told him I would call him tomorrow, as so I can speak with someone to find out if this was fair. I called several stores and found it was within range of a fair.. Especially considering the length of time and the loss of the watch.. When I called him back to accept, he said he read something wrong in an email concerning my watch (I believe it was the weight) and the watch is actually valued at $200.00. I explained I called several jewelers and was told the $800. was indeed a fair price. He disagreed saying he would be taking a huge loss. I explained I entrusted my watch to him, and I don't have the choice to take it to anyone else for pricing or to sell as scrap gold. Especially since I found that only 1% of Rolex's cannot be fixed, and I was given some examples of watches that had been charred (house fire) and smashed by a safe and left underwater for hours.. all repaired.. He said though it was repairable, it wouldn't be feasible with the cost of repair. I told him that it wasn't for him to decide that. My watch was lost, and my choice was taken away from me and now I have to go by your word.. Since I've tried to get this watch returned to me just a couple of weeks of them having it, it's just not fair to me. He asked I call him bak the next day. So I did (as usual) call him back and his father Steven answered the phone. I reminded him who I was and he remembered my watch.. He said that it was repaired for $400. I said "You told me it was lost, even so I was to be quoted a price before the repair" he said 'It was repaired on accident", and because they put $400 into it, they couldn't give me more than $300... I said I would speak with Steven. I did speak w/Steven the next day and Steven then offered me $350.. He couldn't afford the $800.00. I told him what his father said the day before and Steven replied "Don't talk to my father, he doesn't know what going on.. The watch was not repaired and we don't have it" I told him I couldn't accept that offer.. He said he had to speak with his father again.. I called a couple of days later and he ask I come in to settle this.. I was thinking the $800 was going to be the total.. Only to get there and basically go thru the same conversation we've had for the past several weeks.. Again, I wasn't interested and was a bit annoyed he led me into the store only to have the same conversation. I told him again, no way.. He wanted to speak with his attorney and asked I come back in an hour. I did, only to find he wasn't at the store.. He left to run an errand.. I was sooo mad.. I'm wanting to know what is the law concerning a jeweler losing your

before having a chance to get other quotes to it's repair..
