I now live in Mississippi and had a divorce judgement entered against me in South Carolina last week. The judgement for my ex was a large cash amount plus an exhorbitant amount of permanent spousal support based on an income I received in one very good year three years ago, before the recession and job losses impacted my field. Part of the cash award was back alimony and a fine equal to the back alimony, due to my inability to pay the full temporary support amount during the previous 4 months while awaiting the final hearing. In those four months I was able to find a permanent position at a salary above average of my peers, but still far less than I made in 2007. Can anyone please suggest what I can do to extend the time for the cash payment ($14000 in 10 days from signing - which includes $6000 in her attorney fees) and reduce the alimony to an amount based more on my current salary? I'm afraid under this current order I'm going to be in contemp for the rest of my life! HELP!?!?
