Default illness; DUI options

My nephew in Boise has a long term illness. He will soon face DUI charges, which will be a parole violation. The alcohol test showed an amount barely over the limit. A previous prison did not treat his illness effectively, and he worries about going back.

The family cannot afford a lawyer. Is the Boise public defender helpful and understanding? Can he get community service rather than jail, and if so,what steps are needed?

Thank you.

Sorry, don't know the public defender personally, but they are attorneys and they know what they are doing.
