Default Homeowners Insurance

My husband and I have owned a home in the New Port Richey area (actually Trinity) for about 2 1/2 years. Last July we received a letter from our homeowners insurance stating that they had dropped us. We used a broker and we tried ourselves to find new insurance immediately. Unfortunately this was during hurricane season and we were told that in FL, no policies can be written while there is a named storm.
Eventually we found insurance in Sept. and have had the same policy since.
We just received a letter from our mortgage lender stating that they are going to charge us about $2000 to be split into about 3 mortgage payments as a penalty for the time we did not have coverage. There were no claims filed and nothing happened to the home during the lapse in coverage. Are we responsible for this amount? Thank you so much for assistance in this matter!

Yes, if it's required by your mortgage provided to be insurance during this period and fine amount stated in your loan agreement.

I tend to agree. Have you browsed through the information in LawInfo's Free Legal Resource Center to learn more about your issue yet? See: http://www.lawinfo.com/consumer.html. You can certainly try to speak to a lawyer to determine what legal options may be available. In the meantime, you may be able to learn more on your own. Search the "Free Legal Resources" tab, or browse the Consumer Resources. Good luck.
