Unhappy Hit and Run unattended vehicle

Hi,

I was practicing parallel parking and my car hit another vehicle causing damage to the other car. I waited there for around 5 mins after incident and then went on to park my car in the visitor's parking(was a rented car hence didn't have permit to park anywhere else) of the same apt complex, not knowing what to do (was the first time I was driving a car in the US). I went back to my apt and called up my friends to find out what's the best thing to do in such a scenario. He suggested that my house being really close to the scene of accident I must check to see if the owner of the car comes to check his car. he also told me to go back to the scene of accident . So I went back to my car to pick up my contract, locked my car and was walking back to the scene of accident. At the the same time the cops turned up as someone had informed them about the incident and charged me for hit and run. Any idea how serious this offense is? this was the first time I had got any ticket. Please help as my frnd told me I could be looking at losing 8 points and a jail term.

Have you browsed through the information in LawInfo's Free Legal Resource Center to learn more about your issue yet? See: http://www.lawinfo.com/consumer.html. You can certainly try to speak to a lawyer to determine what legal options may be available. In the meantime, you may be able to learn more on your own. Search the "Free Legal Resources" tab, or browse the Consumer Resources. Good luck.
