Gas meter in neighbors basement
On June 1 2005 I gave my landlord at letter stating I would be done renting as on June 30 2005. I called the gas company the week of June 27th and asked them to take my name off the bill as of July 1 2005. Apparently the landlord doesn't have an agreement with the gas company to do that so I had to make an appointment with then to have them turn it off. First available was the 30th of June from 12 -4. The gas company showed up at 12:45 and we realized the meter for my side is in the other tenant’s basement. No one was home to let us in. I called the landlord later and told him the situation and that I wouldn't have access to my side of the duplex after that even and verbally he told me when he had keys in hand he would have the gas company put the bill in his name. Well it is July 11 2005 and he doesn’t feel he should have to put it in his name. What are my legal rights? I have spoke to the gas company and they tell me tough luck this happens all the time. I am waiting to hear form Housing Counseling of Grand rapids MI but I don't want the next guy to get screwed. Shouldn't the landlord have to take some responsibility or at least the gas company?
