Default Free speech or slander

Curiosity has finally gotten the better of me. With all the very strongly worded views being posted online by people employed by news agencies, where does free speech end and slander begin? A person who is employed by a news agency goes out and says the entire campus of Penn St supports child rape to me is a bit unnecessary. It strays far beyond factual news and is a very personal opinion. There's tens of thousands of students that fall under these statements. In a world where a woman is living the good life because her McDonald's hot coffee was too hot, wouldn't it be easy for at least one student to prove that they were negitavely effected by this constant stream of these statements?
