Since you were not married, there is no father, legally speaking. Until and unless he is established as the father, either by signing the birth certificate, by completing the acknowledgement of paternity, or being tested and declared the father by a judge, he has neither rights nor responsibilities.
Also, if you ever seek government financial assistance (ie welfare) you can expect that the state will withold benefits unitl the father is identified, at which point THEY will work to get him legally recognized as the father so that they can pursue him for child support.

While pointers can be helpful, ultimately the number one lesson in any legal action is: don't take legal advice from books, family, friends, co-workers, police officers, grocery clerks, web sites, or people on legal message boards. The only person who can give YOU legal advice is YOUR attorney.
