Droping out of school without parental consent
I know that 1) I am selling myself short, 2) disappointing my family, and 3) 'ruining my life'. I have been on the receiving end of lectures- that border on rants- about the importance of education. I know that getting my diploma does not make me smarter, but is simply a verification of my intelligence- something I can wave around and shove in people's faces. I'm sixteen, and go to a public school in Washington State.
I know that getting good jobs are hard without a degree, and people who never graduate high school are more likely to have lower incomes than those who do,but I can't help but feel that I am wasting my time. I have a job working in costumer service, which I actually enjoy. I intend to continue to work there for as long as I can, or somewhere similar. I entertain no great fantasies of going to Hollywood and making it big, or becoming a billionaire. I simply want to be allowed to work in peace, without having to worry about turning in homework. or dealing with the drama of high school. I have considered changing schools, but sadly, I actually go to the best that I can enroll in.
I have had problems with attendance and participation for years, so I know the problem is not the school(s), or even the public school system, but myself. I lack motivation- and feel that I have already learned everything that they could possibly teach me.
Somewhere in my head, I know this is not true, but my stupid teenage hormones and emotions are making it very difficult for me to think- what most people would call 'Logically'. I intend to get my GED, and if online IQ tests can be believed (and we know they are not infallible) I am nearly MENSA level. (Ha!)
I also fear that I will soon be kicked out of school, and I would rather that I make the deciding choice. Quit while your ahead, you know? Anyway, the reason for my long- winded explanation is to discourage people from responding too harshly.
My question, as stated above, Is 'What is the legal age to drop out of high school, without parental consent?' In Washington. So before you respond, Please, please do not use me as an example of the current American teen, as I am a terrible example, and quite a terrible person.
