You only need to follow any existing court orders. If there are no court orders that address custody/visitation, then you have no legal obligation. If dad wants a custody agreement, especially one that addresses complications like out of state visitation and expenses, then he'll need to go to court and get such an order. Generally speaking, the court puts the burden of transportation on the parent who created the distance. If you moved away from dad, you may be ordered to pick up part of the tab. If dad moved away from you and the child, he should be expecting to bear the brunt of visitation costs.

While pointers can be helpful, ultimately the number one lesson in any legal action is: don't take legal advice from books, family, friends, co-workers, police officers, grocery clerks, web sites, or people on legal message boards. The only person who can give YOU legal advice is YOUR attorney.
