Default Curfew, Traffic Violation, No DL in possession

My son was pulled over for failing to stop at a stop sign. He was then cited for curfew as it was 1am and he was 17 at the time so should have been home by midnight. (Apple Valley Minnesota).

Then he was cited for no driver's license in possession. He was coming home from his girlfriends house and had my permission and theirs to be there. Any ideas on how to negotiate some of this away with the judge. He is going to turn 18 two weeks before his court date with Juvenile court.

Thanks in advance!

Negotiate what? Unfortunately the law doesn't make a note that it's ok to break curfew if you have with your parent's permission. Even so, he still should have had his driver's license in possession. I'm not sure what defense he can give the judge other than "I shouldn't have listened to my parents" - but I'm not too sure how that would fly with most judges.

Bottom line is - these are all relatively minor charges. The traffic infraction and the ticket for failing to carry the license have standard fines. He can pay them and move on and just have to eat the higher insurance costs likely to follow since the stop sign failure was a moving violation. For the curfew - it's possible that the judge will simply remind him AND YOU that parental rules don't trump state statutes or city or county ordinances, etc. He might get a few hours of community service or another fine, but it's not like he's going to be looking at "doing time".

I can understand that this is a frustrating situation, but I have to agree, I am not sure there really is any negotiating room here. He ran a stop sign, he was out after curfew (regardless if he had parental permission) and he didn't have his driver's license on him. I do agree that most likely, it is just going to be some fines and some points on his license.
