Default Collecting Unemployment

I was recently let go from my current job where I had worked for 2.5 years. Am I going to be able to collect unemployment even though I was fired for tardiness? Although I did have 'sick days' left I neglected to let my manager know I was going to be a couple of hours late b/c I was ill (not sure if this is tardiness or insubordination). When filling out the form online I said that I had been warned in the past that this may affect my future employment. Does it even matter what I was fired for? Also, ff I made approx 37,000 yearly (24,000 in salary and 13,00 0 in commissions) what should I expect for my weekly check (child support n/a)? What hold-ups may I expect? In general, what should I expect as I am clueless in this matter? Thank you

You may have better luck if you post this under labor and employment. You could check out the FAQ section on Lawinfo's website at http://www.lawinfo.com/. You may also want to contact your state unemployment office, they may be able to answer your questions.

Laws vary widely by state, but the general rule is that unemployment benefits are awarded to people who become unemployed through no fault of their own...with a list of exceptions. Those exceptions include things like quitting to protect a minor from domestic abuse, or due to loss of transportation when no suitable alternative exits (e.g. the bus).

Ballpark unemployment benefits are often around 40% of your former income, but again this varies widely as it's a state function, not federal.

I've been curious about unemployment myself. Does anyone know much about the Indiana unemployment laws or local company's HR services? A lot of my friends were let go when the economy got bad. Most of them got unemployment, but a few got nothing. They didn't have the money to fight it, so they let it go. Still, I was wondering about those situations.

Have you browsed through the information in LawInfo's Free Legal Resource Center to learn more about your issue yet? See: http://www.lawinfo.com/consumer.html and http://resources.lawinfo.com/en/index.html. You can certainly try to speak to a lawyer to determine what legal options may be available. In the meantime, you may be able to learn more on your own. Search the "Free Legal Resources" tab, or browse the Consumer Resources. Good luck.
