can anyone help!!! after you file an answer for a civil suit and are given a court date can you file a motion for continuance and how do you go about doing that as they can't afford a lawyer, can it be done just by the individual that is being sued or does it (motion for continuance) have to be filed by a lawyer

If you are representing yourself, you do not need an attorney to file a motion for a continuance. Every court has different procedures. I would suggest contacting the clerk or courts.
