Default charges against my son

A couple months ago my son was being harrassed by a group of teenagers. He called the local police a number of times as they were driving by his house at excessive speeds reving their engines and yelling from their cars. My son is 21 with two little boys ages 2 and 9 months. He was in fear of his sons safety with the eratic driving of these teenagers. After months of this harassment my son was outside when they drove by and he broke and told them to stop he went to the car and told his girlfriend to call the police. He told the teenagers that the police would be there soon and went to walk back to his yard and the teenagers put the car in park and said we will wait John (the police officer on duty) won't do anything. As my son walked in front of the car they put the car into gear and hit my son with the car injuring his wrist and shoulder. The problem is in the small town my son lives in the police evidently know these kids and their families because now charges have been filed against my son for criminal damage. They say that he hit the car with his fist and dented it. My sons doctor has said that the injuries that night could not have been caused by hitting a car and were consistent with being hit by the car and falling to the ground. His lawyer (a court appointed lawyer) seems like it is a bother to him to represent him. He tried to get my son to take a defered judgement. My son said no. Between the doctors statement and the reports from that night I believe that the case should be dropped. The teenager that was driving even admitted on his report that they left the football game that they were attending to go drive by my son's house. What should my son do in this case as we have very little money.
