BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP DISPUTE

My partner wants to buy me out...I declined his offer. He's not to happy and will no longer discuss business matters with me. I think he may have retained a lawyer. Legally do you have to inform the other party if you have retained a lawyer? How do I find out?
