I work for the State of Florida, Dept. of Management Services. My office is a 24/7 365 day a year facility in charge of the HVAC, fire alarms, and security alarms for DMS buildings. We just found out that they are installing surveillence cameras in our work area. we were told that they were going to put new cameras outside watching the entrances for our safety, but so far no new cameras are outside, they are all inside watching what we do. Do we have any legal rights for privacy, or does the state have the right to do this. We have never had a problem with theft or damage of state property.

The State, or ANY employer, has the absolute right to watch every inch of their operational facilities, with the exception of spaces wherein a reasonable expectation of privacy exists (ie restrooms, locker rooms, showers). Outside of those types of areas, there is no expectation of privacy.
