Default Apartment Burglar

In 2007, my apartment was broken into. We placed a police report and had an alarm system installed in our apt. When went to speak with the detective handling our case he mentioned that 6 months prior to our break in they busted an operations where employees were involved in burlarizing apartments. Once we heard that we had on our lease that no on is allowed to enter our aparment without our permission. 1) Our Alarm is armed and 2) We don't trust the maintenance crew. The management company of this complex changed many times, and each time a work order was placed we specifically told them of our alarm and they were not allowed to enter without us being home. Two months ago my purse was stolen with our key, I went to the leasing office to request the locks to be changed on the patio door, as well as front door. The maintenance man did come and changed the locks, but would only give us the keys to the front door. He stated that it was policy to not give out the patio door key. Didn't argue with him and let it be, but when I left the office it was my understanding that the leasing office were the only ones who had a key to my patio door. On Tuesday my husband and I recieved calls from our alarm company as our patio door had been opened. I called my neighbor to go over and checked and she immediately called the police. When we got home the officers had already entered through our patio door and checked everything out. There was NO forced entry, and there was nothing missing. They asked if we had left the door unlocked at which point we advised no, as when we set our alarm if a door, window is unlocked or open our alarm wil tell us. After the police left we immediately went to our leasing office to find out who made an attempt to enter our apartment with the key. The leasing office repeatedly told us no one as there was no work order. We asked for the key to the patio door, and when they went to retrieve it the key was missing and no where to be found. My husband and I decide to go to Home depot purchase our own locks and changed all locks. My question is can the leasing office force us to give them a key enlight of what happened?

Have you browsed through the information in LawInfo's Free Legal Resource Center to learn more about your issue yet? See: http://www.lawinfo.com/consumer.html. You can certainly try to speak to a lawyer to determine what legal options may be available. In the meantime, you may be able to learn more on your own. Search the "Free Legal Resources" tab, or browse the Consumer Resources. Good luck.

Default Unfortunately...

Yes, your leasing office will have to have a key to enter into your unit should there actually be an emergency. You need to get the heck out of that building and install a security camera. You do not need to ask for permission to install the camera.
