Unhappy Accused of stealing a CUP of water

My employer accused me of stealing a disposable cup of water and has since taken me off the schedule. Am I laid off? What legal action can I take? I work at my college, in the dining services at the cafeteria. I was off the clock at the time of the incident--wouldn't that make me a regular customer? What are my options?

Thanks!~

There is no legal action you can take. In most states your considered an "at will" employee. This means the employee or employer can terminate employment at any time for any or no reason. Taking you "off" schedule is not a lay off. You can seek UI benefits due to your reduced hours. This can force employer to decide what they wish to do

Have you browsed through the information in LawInfo's Free Legal Resource Center to learn more about your issue yet? See: http://www.lawinfo.com/consumer.html. You can certainly try to speak to a lawyer to determine what legal options may be available. In the meantime, you may be able to learn more on your own. Search the "Free Legal Resources" tab, or browse the Consumer Resources. Good luck.
